Technical

The Filtree system is designed to enhance environmental sustainability in maritime operations. By mixing seawater with engine exhaust gas, the system effectively neutralizes sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions resulting from the combustion of sulphur-containing fuels. Moreover, the Filtree system goes beyond mere emissions reduction. It incorporates advanced filtration mechanisms to remove ultra-fine particles from the exhaust gas, further improving air quality and minimizing environmental impact.

Additionally, the system can be enhanced with a CO2 capture module, demonstrating its versatility and commitment to carbon footprint reduction. The captured CO2 is stored in a solvent within the battery or holding tank, ready to be offloaded when saturated, and utilized in industries where CO2 serves as a valuable product.

The standard Filtree System is suitable for engine sizes between 3.0 and 15.0 MW.

Yes, the system is compact thanks to its new technology and is also suitable for smaller ships, such as coasters, container feeders, small tankers, and handy-size bulkers.

High sulphur fuel is a by-product of the refining process and will remain available for a long time. Producers will continue to find ways to bring it to market in order to keep it profitable.

The Filtree System is a plug-and-play concept consisting of standard modules and materials. This allows for quick installation with minimal modifications to the ship. The modules can later be exchanged and installed on other ships, making the system suitable even for older vessels.

Yes, we collaborate with you to provide flexible solutions tailored to your specific needs, including the option to supply our scrubber and OCCS as individual components, without a pre-commissioned tower.

We offer tailored solutions based on the desired CO₂ capture rate, available onboard space, and the type of fuel used.

Our Carbon Capture Unit is compatible with non-sulfuric exhaust gases — either in combination with our Filtree system or when installed on vessels operating on sulfur-free fuels (such as LNG or methanol). In both cases, the CO₂ Capture Module removes CO₂ from exhaust gases and stores it at ambient pressure and temperature, either in a dedicated onboard tank or in our CO₂ Batteries for later processing onshore.

The CO₂ capture capacity of our system is project- and vessel-specific, influenced by factors such as vessel type, size, engine, trading routes, cargo type, and fuel consumption. We work closely with you to identify the optimal solution for your vessel. Our company’s size and innovative culture enable us to be flexible and collaborative, helping you achieve your sustainability goals in the most effective way possible.

In 2023, Value Maritime launched a sister company, Value Carbon, which focuses on the land-based part of the value chain and provides clients with options for utilizing CO₂ after it has been captured onboard. Currently, the captured CO₂ is supplied to greenhouses in Rotterdam, where there is a demand for external CO₂ to enhance crop yields.

Central to these efforts is the development of our own Value Hub. Strategically located in the Port of Rotterdam, the facility is being designed to provide a direct and reliable way for shipowners — as well as other land-based CO₂ emitters — to offload captured carbon and connect to a growing carbon value chain.

Once completed, the Value Hub will continue to support CO₂ deliveries to greenhouses, while also being able to purify and, where needed, liquefy CO₂. This will open pathways for permanent underground storage and reuse opportunities such as e-methanol production — closing the loop between onboard capture and new fuel supply.

Installation & Maintenance

The delivery time, including installation preparation, is approximately 7 months after signing the agreement.

Thanks to the plug-and-play concept of the Filtree System and our experience, the maximum off-hire time of the ship during installation is minimal: approximately 10 to 14 days.

When requested by our clients, Value Maritime takes care of the engineering, material delivery, and installation of the Filtree System on board your ship.

The Filtree System has been successfully installed on coasters, container feeders, and tankers (Handy, MR, LR1). Recently, it has also been adopted by bulk carriers.

In addition to offering extensive support and parts sales, Value Maritime Services provides the option to enter into a maintenance and service contract. This contract includes remote assistance, annual servicing, and consumable parts. By proactively addressing maintenance needs, this contract minimises downtime and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

The remote monitoring and control system ensures that any problems or upgrades can be addressed remotely. Additionally, performance data can be measured onshore and shared with other stakeholders, such as ports, customers, financiers, and more.

Environmental

The Filtree System filters sulfur, fine particulate matter and CO₂. Additionally, a Wash Water Filter can be installed to clean the used seawater by removing soot particles and oil residues.

Fine particulate matter (fine dust) consists of tiny particles released into the air after fuel combustion. Inhaling these particles is very harmful to health. Ships using low sulfur fuel do not filter particulate matter.

All particulate matter released from ships is emitted through the chimney. Ultra-fine particulate matter can travel long distances before settling.

As a result, particulate matter emitted by ships far out at sea can still be inhaled by people and cause long-term health damage. It can even travel as far as the polar caps, negatively affecting the melting of these vital ice bodies. By filtering 99% of particulate matter through our Filtree System, you help prevent this and contribute to combating climate change.

Using post-combustion chemical absorption technology, our system captures CO₂ from treated exhaust gases, stores it onboard, and transfers it for processing onshore, minimizing onboard energy use.

To filter out ultra-fine particles or soot from the effluent discharge water, a two-stage filter system can be installed. In these setups, effluent discharge water first passes through a primary filter. It then flows into a secondary filter housing, where the remaining fine soot is captured by a filter candle. This filter candle can be removed and cleaned as necessary.

Firstly, the Filtree System uses rotating packed bed technology, which significantly enhances cleaning efficiency by increasing the contact surface between wash water and exhaust gases. It is designed to capture 99% of SOx emissions and particulate matter (up to 90% of PM2.5 and 99% of PM10).

Secondly, unlike traditional scrubbers, the wash water in the Filtree System is close to neutral pH rather than acidic. When equipped with the optional Wash Water Filter, it further improves environmental performance by removing soot particles and oil residues from the used seawater, resulting in cleaner discharges.

Finally, the Filtree System is upgradable to onboard carbon capture, allowing for future integration with CO₂ capture technology.

Financial

The Filtree System allows for the use of cost-effective high-sulfur fuel (HSFO) while meeting emissions regulations. Future revenue opportunities will arise from the system’s onboard CO₂ capture capabilities.

There are three options for purchasing a Filtree system:

– Buy

– Lease

– Fuel Saving Agreement (FSA)

Leasing offers lower upfront costs, with Value Maritime financing most of the equity. Clients pay a monthly lease fee at a competitive interest rate.

Leasing involves fixed monthly payments, while an FSA links payments to a percentage of the fuel savings generated.
